They loved. They lost. They lived. In the small Yorkshire town of Cottenly - dominated by the steel works and surrounded by beautiful countryside - Isaac Stanford lives with his wife Emily and their three lovely daughters, known locally as the Stanford lasses.

Alice, the eldest, lives only for her work as a secretary and chapel on Sunday. Fair and loving Lizzie is content with her job making umbrellas - until she falls in love with George Crossman and all she desires is to be a wife and mother. And headstrong Ruth, the merry one, is intent upon marrying handsome charmer, Walter Wray, despite warnings from friends and family.

Already emotionally damaged by a traumatic childhood, Alice struggles to lead a normal life. Poor but happy with her ever increasing family, with the onset of war, Lizzie faces the threat of losing all she holds dear. And Ruth soon realises she has made a terrible mistake in her marriage as she becomes trapped in a life of poverty and violence.

As the years pass each sister is forced to confront her greatest challenge ...

I truly enjoyed The Stanford Lasses. The authentic use of dialects added to my enjoyment. Having lived in the UK near the epicenter of this book, I loved reading about places I've seen and visited. But more than the familiarity, the plot and characters were wonderful. Each character came to life under the skillful development by the author and the story flowed smoothly through the several decades covered. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!

The Stanford Lasses (Audible Audio Edition) Glenice Crossland Maggie Mash Random House Audiobooks Books Reviews

Although I thought the story started slowly I soon found myself bewitched with the family. Their loving witty embrace for each other served to draw the story we all share of family. Love, lose and hope generation after generation. The tie that binds doesn't break. A wonderful story of wartime trails and triumphs.
It seems as if the Stanford Lasses are people you know. It is a totally believable story of a family and their trials and their good times, too. I didn't want to put it down just because I loved the people in the story.
Good story with well developed characters. Can't imagine having to endure the poverty depicted. Look forward to reading more by this author.
Like many of these cross generational stories. Love conquers all. The women are all beautiful loving and understanding except for some underlying issue. Most of the men are Dutiful, faithful good looking. There's always a brute some physical and some psychological. Not at all unpredictable, but charming all the same.
I always enjoy period pieces in which women have to cope with oppressive societal expectations. Very similar to my personal experience, the story illustrates how three women who were raised by the same parents can have drastically different personalities and expectations, but in the end family always come first.
I cannot get into this book to save my life, despite its earnestness and the time period, one which fascinates me. And I find myself consumed with grief for turning my back on these well-meaning folks, but gosh, I cannot imagine living long enough to finish all the books I've bought, so this one I've got to give up on. Am having such a hard time focusing on each page that I am not even looking for errors, unlike me. Actually I'm not sure there were any.
You did well with writing the way they probably sounded.
I think some words are important to try and get correct, but I read once that it's not necessary to do so. I like to, though, just as you did.
I try and get the sounds of southern plantation speakers just right.
Thanks for letting me meet your characters, they were lovely.
(all except H. H. of course-yuck!)
